Talk:Guy Lombardo
Guy Lombardo was nominated as a Music good article, but it did not meet the good article criteria at the time (March 19, 2024, reviewed version). There are suggestions on the review page for improving the article. If you can improve it, please do; it may then be renominated. |

Liota's
[edit]Guy Lombrdo owned a home on a canal in Freeport, Long Island in the 40s. His boat, Tempo IV, was parked in the canal next to the house, and it could be seen as we passed by on the road. We usually were driving to the end of the road, to a place where we could buy steamed clams. It was called "Liota's East Point House." At some point Guy Lombardo bought the place as an investment and changed the name to "Guy Lombardo's East Point House," but eveyone still called it Liota's.
Free plug deleted
[edit]Just removed a gratuitous plug for Nike. Nice try, junior marketers - your boss won't see this one. Johnno2 15:30, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- Two things. One, the plug was for Nikon, and two, the sponsorship was added nearly a year before you removed it, by a local Freeport booster, not a corporate marketer. Check the edit history. Chubbles 02:17, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
Museum
[edit]The paragraph about the Museum is dripping with innuendo. Reading between the lines, I assume there is a dispute between the City and the former curator. Would someone please put in some solid information with a reference? Surely there must have been something in the local newspaper. Rees11 (talk) 00:20, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
- Never mind, I did it myself. Rees11 (talk) 00:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Tributes
[edit]I'd like to remove the entire "Tributes" section. It seems trivial and not notable. Rees11 (talk) 00:43, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Easy listening
[edit]According to the Easy listening article, this style didn't develop until the middle of the century, and Lombardo is not listed as one of its players. I seem to remember Guy saying they started out playing dance/pop (1920s), and stuck with it when other bands moved on to swing and later styles. He also said, "Tin Pan Alley gave us the music that was our trademark." So I'm taking out the part about easy listening. Rees11 (talk) 15:43, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed. I'm going to take it out (again?). Kendall-K1 (talk) 11:20, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
Addition to Tributes
[edit]Anal Cunt did a song called Guy Lombardo. Should this be added to the tributes section? 134.129.215.169 (talk) 18:18, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- Is the song actually about Guy Lombardo, or did they just use his name as a song title? If it's about him, I'd say definitely yes. If not, maybe, we do have a bridge and a street named after him. I'd never heard of this band but they seem to be notable. Kendall-K1 (talk) 00:22, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Discography
[edit]I'm surprised to find there's no discography. I will start one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.119.232.210 (talk) 12:03, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
- This is good, but can you please cite your source? I can help format the citation if that would help. Kendall-K1 (talk) 17:11, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
Cite my source? I have a grade 3 education. The albums come from eBay listings, and record label discographies at bsnpubs.com - the singles and chart positions come from various Joel Whitburn publications. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.7.156.142 (talk) 17:16, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
- Have you got the actual url of the page at bsnpubs.com? And titles of the Joel Whitburn publications? The eBay listings are WP:OR but I don't think anyone will dispute them. We may want to note that it's a partial list. Kendall-K1 (talk) 22:23, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

- I made section headings for the singles, and made it multicolumn. You can now see more information on one screen but is it too busy or harder to read? Should I revert this, or expand it to the albums? Opinions please. Also, what's the difference between the two Decca sections? Kendall-K1 (talk) 20:01, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
The difference between the 2 Decca sections in the singles discography is this: the singles 1927-1939 come from two websites that are cited #13 and #14. The singles 1940-1952 come from a book and is cited #15. So it's a matter of citations, in that #15 doesn't cover 1927-1939.
The column work looks fine to me. If you expand it to the albums it might make it easier to read.
Maybe the discography should be moved to it's own page entirely. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylombardo (talk • contribs) 12:07, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Jones Beach Theater
[edit]Ciao fellow Wikipedians --just a quick note...I've added some additional content for several of the revival productions of various Broadway Theater musicals which Guy Lombardo produced during the course of two decades performing at the Jones Beach Theater along with links to various collaborators who assisted him over the years. I hope it helps. Ciao 160.72.80.178 (talk) 00:26, 8 November 2023 (UTC)NHPL

Issues with the article
[edit]There are some issues with the article that I think should be addressed before a Good Article review takes place:
- Some unsourced statements in sections such as "Other television", "Death", the Discography sections, and "Tributes", the latter's references do not seem to verify the claims. Per the Good Article criteria (WP:GACR), all statements should have references supporting them to verify the claims.
- There is a "Better source needed" tag in the article.
- The article has an unclear citation style. Per WP:CITEVAR, that should be changed.
Note that a Good article nomination is an article that is to be evaluated against the good article criteria in order to become a good article (GA).
Based on edit summaries I assume that the nominator may have mistaken GAN with WP:Peer review, and if so, a request for a Peer review should be made instead before a GAN. Spinixster (chat!) 10:19, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- O.K. I've added a few more reference citations in the sections mentioned above. I hope that they help with the Good Article Nomination. Thanks in advance for your guidance.160.72.80.178 (talk) 21:38, 12 February 2024 (UTC)NHPL
- The article still has an unclear citation style and many unreliable sources such as Discogs. Please refer to WP:RSP for a list of reliable sources. Spinixster (chat!) 07:09, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- Ciao fellow editors: So sorry for the use of Discogs.com as a reference. Apparently it is no longer cited as a reliable reference. So sorry. With this in mind, I have replaced the citation with a reference from "The Billboard". I hope this is an improvement. The reference to an "unclear citation style" and "many unreliable sources" remains ambiguous, however, so i have restrained from initiating any additional modifications pending specific clarifications from text in the article which appears problematic. Thanks again and Ciao1160.72.80.178 (talk) 16:54, 16 February 2024 (UTC)NHPL P. S. I also included an Biography Section to include several books which have been published about Guy Lombardo which also include selected Discographies and his autobiography "Auld Acquaintance" -published by Doubleday Publications, Garden City new York in 1975 and reissued as an Ebook in 2011 as shown in the reference citation. I hope this helps to resolve any doubts. Ciao160.72.80.178 (talk) 18:46, 16 February 2024 (UTC)NHPL
- Is there a reason why you don't want to make/have not made a Wikipedia account? It's free and you get access to many perks.
- Anyways, I have elaborated on why the citation styles should be consistent above (WP:CITEVAR), the page also has information on citation styles. Using citation templates also help. References to IMDB (a self published source) and other questionable sources still remain, and those references need to be replaced with reliable ones. This page for tips for Good article nominations is also useful. Spinixster (chat!) 10:24, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Hey, I recognize this guy! I do thank you for nominating this article and working on it, but I don't believe it's just yet ready for a review. There are a fair few problems. I've listed some here:
Prose
[edit]- There are issues with formatting. Quotation marks are inconsistently used around song titles, same for album titles in italics, as well as release dates in parentheses. Sometimes, words are capitalized midway through a sentence, or they are missing spaces. Commas seem to be needed in many places. As well, there are many duplicate links, for example, "Louis Armstrong" is repeated three times in one section.
- Generally, the writing is too flowery and promotional, some could be fixed via attribution, but others might need more consideration or removal. I'd look through the article with a "Use Plain English" mentality in mind. Watch out for phrases like "legendary", "opulent revivals", "talented actors", "extravaganzas", "balked", etc. Here are other specific examples:
as millions of celebrants enjoyed the festivities within the comfort of their own homes
for his musical message of hope, peace and happiness for all mankind
prominent naturalized American citizens of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds who made exceptional contributions to American society within literature, politics, the arts and sciences
From the realm of grand opera, Lombardo recruited such luminaries as
fickle weather conditions which prevailed near the shoreline often featured spontaneous drenching downpours which discouraged concertgoers
while also ensuring memorable nights of dancing pleasure to the strains of "the sweetest music this side of heaven"
Lombardo's talents also extended beyond the realm of jazz music
- The coord template is inappropriate for a biography, even then, I don't see its connection to Lombardo, it just seems like a random street.
- The lead is quite short compared to the article.
- The article jumps around chronologically a fair bit, which makes it hard to follow. I point out the paragraph about his death in the "Royal Canadians" section (which, on another note, I think could become its own article), as well as the radio, television, film, and theater subsections.
- Is the "Life" section supposed to be a "Personal life" section? If so, I'd imagine it should be expanded.
- Bibliography sections usually list the texts written by the subject. If the books written about Lombardo have received any news coverage, they should be incorporated into the prose.
- The "Tributes" section contains only one-sentence paragraphs.
Sourcing
[edit]- Some unsourced material, like the paragraph beginning with "On December 31, 1956", the year of his marriage, and his adoption of the tuba.
- Some sources are unreliable. Refs 91 and 92 are just search results which need to be more specific, FiberClassics is a wiki fork, and IMDb is user-generated.
- A few dead links need to be adressed.
- This is not a requirement, but I'd encourage you to work on the source formatting and add more paramaters. Dates are inconsistent (e.g. YYYY-MM-DD, MDY, and DMY are used interchangably), many sources link to an archive when the original is available, titles like "Archive copy" and "Clipped from the Paris News" should be changed, common website names should be used instead of literal URLs, links are inconsistent, and specifically, ref 52 should use the cite news template.
I have not particularly considered source quality or article breadth, but I imagine a trip to peer review could provide some insight, as well as some help with prose and structure. But please, don't let this review discourage you! Keep at it, and feel free to ask me any questions! Averageuntitleduser (talk) 03:17, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
