Hi Fuz,

re your edit on Pope John Paul I. You may not know it but it is wikipedia policy to use styles like His Holiness on certain articles. All the papal articles use the HH style. You probably were unaware of this when you removed it but please do not remove it. This is obviously a legitimate dispute. ArbCom have been misbehaving for some time now. The worries editors may have about their own accounts being attacked for standing up to ArbCom are legitimate. Please stop vandalizing the discussion.

Whether they are swearing or not, deleting their comments is obviously not helping the situation. I suggest using strikethroughs if you wish.

If you delete their comments, you only prove their point that ArbCom and their lackeys are engaging in a coverup of abuse of power. Tony Sidaway seems to be hell-bent on proving this true with himself as the foremost example, and perhaps Calton as the secondary.

Re: User talk:Harmil#Vandal: The edits in question are not simple vandalism, IMHO. They are annoying, stubborn, harrassing personal attacks that are badly formatted, but that's the fine line between a vandal and a punk, isn't it...? Please stop vandalizing this discussion. You are only proving that ArbCom and the Admins are trying to cover up their behavior rather than operate in good faith. The language has been cleaned up with strikethroughs as fits recent policy on Personal Attacks.

Open proxies

Hi Fuzheado, the anon IPs you're blocking over the arbcom edits are open proxies, which should be blocked indefinitely. However, it takes a few minutes to check that they are, and if you block for seven days in the meantime, it means I have to undo your block before I can block indefinitely, because the shorter block takes precedence. It would be helpful if you could either hold off for the check to be made, or else block indefinitely, and I'll check them after you've done it, and will shorten any blocks that turn out not to be from open proxies (though they all have been so far). Hi again, I'm wondering whether the block and blocklog tabs are visible to you on user and talk pages. I noticed you unblocked one of my indefinite blocks and then blocked it indefinitely again, which suggests you didn't check the blocklog before unblocking it (because there was no need). Maybe you didn't check it because you don't have it handy? I know when I first became an admin, I couldn't see these tabs on user pages, but someone installed them for me, and they make life a lot easier. Let me know and I can ask him to install for you if you don't have it already. Block tabs

Fuzheado, I'm copying this out of my archive. This is what Knowledge Seeker sent me when he first set it up for me: "It's very simple to do in fact, and doesn't require you to do anything to your computer, only on Wikipedia ... you have to be using the (default) <monobook.css skin; if you've changed it in your preferences this won't work. So here's what you do: go to User:Korath/blockip.js (which is linked from User:Korath/Potentially useful stuff in case you want to find it again. Click to edit it, and copy the whole text. Then go to User:SlimVirgin/monobook.js, edit it, and paste the code in there. Save it and you're done! You'll have to do a full reload to clear your browser's cache, using control-shift-R. Deleting page content

Thanks, I accidently did it again and got a message from someone else about how it would be considered "Vandalism" to continue...Anyhow, forgive me for doing so.

The only reason I wiped the page out is because I don't know any other way to "edit" a page like that then to start with a clean slate...I'm used to working with programs like Dreamweaver, etc., and I don't like there being content already on something, so if I'm going to put something on a page, I like it to already be blank, so what's the big issue with wiping out this page? Unless you have any other suggestions with how to edit it? I thought the purpose of this "Your first page" thing was to have a page to write an article from scratch on?

Sorry for any problems this may have caused.

See, what I thought the purpose of "Your First Page" was to be able to do just what it implies- begin a page from scratch. I'm used to working with software that would enable you to do so, like Dreamweaver, for instance. So anyway, the reason I deleted the content of the "first page" was to be able to experiment with the tools and options and see what their immediate effects were. I figured that if this was a page generation program to be used within Wikipedia then it shouldn't be causing any problems, right? I also figured it was a personalized page until it was "published" or "finalized" or whatever you wanted to call it, so please explain whatever I'm not getting about that. But the point is, it says it's "Your First Page," so that's what I understand about it (since it says you can build your own article from the ground up, and that's what I want to do).

Thanks for dealing with this. It seems to me that an IP block should be superceded for a logged in user by the block/nonblock status of that user. Is this possible? I suppsoe for sockpuppting you might not want this, but an annon vandal won't log in, and if he does, his login ID will be blocked soon enouhg. DES 5 July 2005 04:04 (UTC)

Re: an autounblocking, that's an intriguing idea. I'll have to think about whether it would work as a feature request. I could see that it would weaken the vandal fighting ability, because if there was an active vandal, someone logging in legitimately from the same proxy/IP would consistently unblock it, which would take away a crucial capability for the admins. Ideally, the block would not be removed, the software would simply run the decision tree:

1. User Logged in?
   1. No: check IP (jump to 4 below)
   2. Yes: check for user blocks.
2. User blocked?
   1. Yes: forbid Edit
   2. No: check for sock-puppet block on IP
3. Sock-puppet block in place?
   1. Yes: forbid edit
   2. no: allow edit
4. User not logged in
5. IP block in place?
   1. Yes: forbid edit
   2. no: allow edit

Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3

PBurka pointed out that an important omission from this proposal: a band could meet WP:MUSIC criterion #5 (sharing a member with a famous band) and still be speedily deletable by this criterion. I've added a sentence to the proposal to reflect this: it now reads An article about a musician or music group that does not assert having released at least one album, nor having had media coverage, nor having a member that is or was also part of a well-known music group. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead. Please consider if you support this new wording, and change your vote if not. Hey, back there. I would appreciate if you would rather not remove redirects I created. Afterall I made it for a reason. It is simply not the case that we don't really use them [nonenglish redirects] in WP. If you would take a look at articles about Japan, you can find that many, if not most, of these articles have the name of the article in English and redirects from the kanji writing. Some people even go as far as creating redirects from Japanese writings of titles for not-Japanese related articles (typical example: color, 色). While the latter goes too far, it makes sense for the Japanese articles. I fact, it is a general practice that many articles about non-English topics with an English-written title have redirects from the local writing. I could put here a long list of examples, but I think you get my point. Please don't delete this kind of redirects any more.

Can you provide some examples? I just know from experience we don't have many kanji or Chinese character title names in English Wikipedia pointing to English articles, or at least it's not the standard practice. It looks as if you understood what I wanted to say. My examples didn't make much of an impression, though...

Well... examples. Looks as if some other people have been removing those redirects, too, for some mysterious reason (Many of 障子,障子,着物,着物,歌舞伎,浮世絵 have had a redirect). I am on a very slow connection, so it takes a lot of time to load pages and find kanji redirects. I provided of course many of my own articles about Japanese related topics with redirects (but I guess, this is not a good argument.) Except for that I found: 東京. Many other places in Japan had a redirect, but is has also been removed (e.g. 鎌倉、奈良、新宿、京都、北海道、渋谷、銀座、沖縄、関西、大阪、箱根.) Guess I don't make much of a case with my examples, if they are being removed. I think of it as in a way similar to the diacritics discussion, recently. I wonder, why people remove them, its not paper, right? Yes, it's been pretty much policy for some time now (see Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(use_English) that article titles need to be at least in the Latin character set. With MediaWiki 1.5 software, you can have titles in Chinese or Japanese or whatever, but I'm afraid any addition in Chinese or Japanese characters will be wiped. But is this so bad? No one really looks for it here anyway, so folks will look it up in ja: or zh: and then wikilink over to English, right? Otherwise, en: will be full of Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, etc. and every language under the sky if we allow Chinese/Japanese characters here. Fuzheado | Talk 08:41, 10 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for providing the link to the policy. I have to admit you are right about what you said concerning the practice of non-English character links, I didn't know that and I was surprised to read alas the software doesn't won't allow "北京" as a title (and this seems to date back more than two years), because, until now, this kind of redirect has worked without a problem. I don't think it is so bad, but I thought it was elegant and comfortable to have redirects from local writings to English-titled articles. You might have problems with your keyboard (or windows) or just not know the Roman transliteration in some cases, so you type the non-English name of it and you get it anyway. I found that neat and consequent, considering the case with the diacritics. And I am sure to have one more title for each Korea/China/Japan/India/Russia/Thai etc. article won't blow it up. As you suggest, it's a tough call, and I'm not sure whether I will cover it, and if so how. The situation is a challenge in terms of practicing responsible journalism. It's sort of newsworthy, but sort of uninteresting rehash of things that have happened before and will happen again. A case like this one, I wouldn't mind seeing the community start the ball rolling to show they want to see the story, kind of the way they did with the story on the London bombings article (which I would have covered anyway, of course). Unicode for EasyTimeline

Hi Andrew, I made major changes in EasyTimeline and some in Ploticus (rendering package) before Wikimania, tested it all succesfully under Cygwin, and are now waiting for someone to build Linux version of Ploticus. I have an offer for that so will pursue this soon. But generally I have to slow down a bit as my RSI is bothering me again, after 5 years of relative absence. But it is on my shortlist for sure. Hi. I heard you can read chinese, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to help me out. While RC patrolling I stumbled across some information about penis replacement surgery in the Penis article. However, I'm a little skeptical of it, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to confirm that the information in theis chinese reference article verifies the added information? i am working in "Far Eastern Economic Review", recently i discover someone in my group who is a mass-entry-person does not write any "edited summary" and when i check her entries and compare them, i see no differences (also alot of slight difference like changing a single letter without pressing "m") . however she very frequently clicking on the edit bottom, i guess probably to show an impression that she is over-whelmingly involving in all the big contribution, which is a lie. it does affect morale of our group and i guess lies to groupmates do really hurt.

hope our instructor can kindly check this out and help us
