[edit]Later historians (Ostrogorski e.g.) have revised this picture considerably. Although M was no great statesman his ministers (Bardas e.g.) did a fine job and so M's reign helped to lay the foundation for Basil II's greatness.
The drunkard story was mainly an attempt to 'justify' the later usurpation
