Article needs to provide some history

The census data shows a huge 45.8% population decline from 1850 - 1860. Even by 1960, the population hadn't recovered to 1850's level. What could have caused this? (Not the Civil War, which didn't start until 1861.) Maybe someone could talk to the Union County Historical Society to find answers. 174.24.67.169 (talk) 21:37, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
