• 1867 – Skjærdalen and Tyristrand are connected on the Randsfjorden Line in Norway.
• 1892 – The first California Limited passenger train on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway arrives in Chicago, after a round trip to Los Angeles.
• 1895 – Hatori Station, in Japan, opens.

20th century

• 1909 – The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway inaugurates Britain's first suburban surface rail electrification scheme in South London.
• 1919 – The first passenger train of the San Diego and Arizona Railway "arrives" in San Diego from El Centro, California, for the official line opening ceremony.
• 1919 – The Canadian Railway War Board is reorganized as the Railway Association of Canada.
• 1939 – The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad inaugurates the Champion passenger train between New York City, and Miami.
• 1959 – The Virginian Railway is merged into the Norfolk and Western Railroad.
• 1962 – The remaining section of the Hanshin Amagasaki Kaigan Line between Takasu and Deyashiki is closed.
• 1989 – The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad is merged into the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
• 1990 – Construction crews on the Channel Tunnel from both England and France break through the last amount of rock separating the two tunnels, forming the first land link between the two countries.
• 1996 – Norwegian State Railways is split into the Norwegian National Rail Administration and Norges Statsbaner.

21st century

• 2003 – JR West discontinues service on the Kabe Line between Kabe and Sandankyō stations.

Births

• 1791 – Asa Whitney, developer of the process of annealing railroad car wheels that enabled trains to safely increase both loads and speed (d. 1874).
• 1826 – William Mahone, American civil engineer and Confederate Army Major General who built the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, a predecessor of the Norfolk and Western (d. 1895).

Deaths

• 1920 – Edward Ponsonby, director for London, Brighton and South Coast Railway beginning in 1895 and chairman of same 1908-1920, dies (b. 1851).
• 1938 – David Blyth Hanna, first president of Canadian National Railway (b. 1858).
• 2004 – Jack Anderson, Chief mechanical engineer for and co-owner of the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad, and chief mechanical engineer for the Nevada Northern Railway Museum (b. 1953).
