Death
[edit]Note this page says he died 2005-03-10 whilst Recent Deaths says 2005-03-11. The BBC says "Thursday night" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/entertainment/tv_and_radio/4340115.stm -- SGBailey 12:37, 2005 Mar 11 (UTC)
I'll go with the BBC on that one. Updated Recent deaths accordingly. Anilocra 13:01, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Did you know that he used to deride the Pope of Rome?
[edit]Did anyone else know that he used to deride the Pope of Rome through doing skits in which he was dressed up as the Pope of Rome & seated on a sedan chair? I know that his other famous way of poking fun at the Catholic Church was to dress up as a priest. - (Aidan Work 06:12, 13 December 2005 (UTC))
- Uh, yeah, like all the time, dude, he equally savaged the Catholics and the Anglicans, which was the charm of the show.
- In fact, in one of his monologues, he said, "I hope God has a sense of humour; otherwise, I'm in bloody trouble."
- Awesome, awesome comedian, no one else even comes close, before or since. -- 98.16.209.13 (talk) 01:58, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Will

Toast
[edit]I wonder about the cited toast "Goodnight, thank you, and may your god go with you". I remember it as "...may your feet go with you." Was this done only once for the effect or was this the actual form? 213.115.59.220 14:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- I watched him often and it was always "...and may your god go with you."
"May your feet go with you" was, indeed, used at the end of the `79 Christmas special in relation to Christmas shopping! I`m sure that was the only time it was used! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.27.245.86 (talk) 23:56, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
And yes he poked fun at the Pope just as he did Church of England clergy and many others. Dabbler 18:19, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
But the end quote has been, with two exceptions,"Good night, thank you, and may your God go with you."
Aside from the exception listed above, he ended one show with,"good night, thank you, and my god go with me."98.16.209.13 (talk) 02:00, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Will
Fair use rationale for Image:Dave-Allen-Show.jpg
[edit]Image:Dave-Allen-Show.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:05, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
TCN Nine
[edit](This was added to the article by User:GedFit at 06:15, 14 July 2008. I've moved it to the talk page. --McGeddon (talk) 08:10, 14 July 2008 (UTC))
"To the editors of Wikipedia, who so kindly removed my recent contribution to this page, please note that it was the TCN Nine Network who controlled and broadcast the Australian Dave Allen specials in the 1970s, NOT the Seven Network. The shows were produced by Dave's friend Austin Steele, and there are several letters that I have on file between Austin and myself that can prove this, plus various other information that proves that Dave Allen, with all due respect, and like most other comedy performers, did not create all of his own material."
- Thanks, I've edited the article to correct the channel. --McGeddon (talk) 08:14, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
- Although you corrected the channel, the dates are still wrong. The Dave Allen Specials in Australia were definitely in the 70's. I saw the famous, controversial show at home in Sydney and we didn't arrive in Australia until October 1968. The specials didn't start until a few years later (it could have been 1973 not 1963) 99.251.129.80 (talk) 23:40, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
Anti-Catholicism categories
[edit]This article was in the categories Category:Anti-Catholicism in Ireland and Category:Anti-Catholicism in the United Kingdom. I've removed them, as I don't think he really fits: those categories are mainly about sectarian discrimination and persecution. Allen wasn't 'anti-Catholic' in that sense, being equally opposed to all religions; if he did focus on Catholicism, it's only because that's the one he had most personal familiarity with, rather than due to particular prejudice against it. (To put it another way, if he belongs in the 'Anti-Catholicism' categories, then he should also be in 'Anti-Protestant' ones as well.) Robofish (talk) 16:10, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
New Faces on the BBC?
[edit]It states in this article that Dave Allen appeared on New Faces, in 1959, on the BBC. I have only ever heard of the programme being on ITV, made by Associated Television (ATV). Here's the Wikipedia article about that programme: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Faces
It didn't start until 1973, and there's no mention of it ever being shown on the BBC. There is no citation in the Dave Allen article, either, so is it a joke or something...? 70.238.220.252 (talk) 13:04, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Quite genuine. It is an earlier BBC talent series with the same title. See the second paragraoph of "Great Irish Comedians". Philip Cross (talk) 22:50, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Underwater car excape
[edit]The filmed underwater car escape on one of Allen's television shows is surely worthy of inclusion, not least because of Allen's claim that a boy on a day trip to Ayr had escaped from the family car, when it fell into the, only because he had seen the stunt on the show. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:20, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
"Are you the comedian with half a finger?" "No, I'm the comedian with nine-and-a-half fingers...."
[edit]Just wondering how reliable the source is re the story of how Allen lost his finger. According to a recent BBC documentary about him, even people who had been friends with him for several years didn't know the truth about it as he had given so many conflicting explanations, not least during his TV monologues. MFlet1 (talk) 16:00, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, quite so. In that documentary, even his own son claimed that he did not know the real reason. That was the only on-line source I could find. The source is the Irish Independent from 20 February 2005, where the informant is one of Allen's old schoolmates in "Kenagh", Paddy Egan, who sat beside him at school. Egan claims that Allen missed six days' school in June of 1941, claiming that the O'Mahony family "lived in a big house in Moss Town and outside it there was an old mill that had been burnt, but children played there. The old cog wheels were still there and David put his finger into one of the cog wheels, one of the other children moved it and the finger was removed." Not sure if this makes the story any more or less believable than if Allen had told it himself. But at least it's a mainstream and local printed source. The same story appeared in the Longford Leader, with a picture of the house: [1] and with an exact date of 6 June 1941 also given. Maybe both sources should be used? Martinevans123 (talk) 16:15, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- The claim it was done to avoid National Service raises a few questions the answers for which could be used to clarify the truthfulness or otherwise. Was there National Service in the Irish Republic? Noting he came to Britain at 19, would an Irish citizen (as he remained lifelong) be liable or exempt from the British system of conscription which lasted until the early 1960s?Cloptonson (talk) 13:06, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
- Where has this claim ever been made? Martinevans123 (talk) 13:14, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hadnt heard that before, but to answer your questions, no national service in Ireland, and as an Irish citizen he was exempt from UK national service. Murry1975 (talk) 09:47, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Removed and tagged, most are probably gags and jokes, and really shouldnt be in the section. Murry1975 (talk) 12:22, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

4th Child
[edit]Can someone please look into the fact that Dave Allen has 4 children, not 3? According to the great God of Google, he has also got another son named Jonathan O' Mahoney. 86.30.247.136 (talk) 21:45, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- This source mentions: "daughter Christina Pette (adopted when she was nine by the comedian and his first wife Judith)" and "his other children, Jane and Edward, and his stepson Jonathan." But no mention of Cullum - presumably becasue he was born after his father's death. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:21, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, ok. The IP above is me, but I was at my brother's house and forgot to login! :P Anyway, we were a little confused because, looking at the infobox on Allen, it only shows 3 kids. Should Jonathan, as a stepson, still be included in that list, or is that only for biological children? CharlieTheCabbie|Yack to the driver 23:45, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
- Well, he seems to have benefitted from his father's will, so I see no reason to exclude him. I'm not sure if step/ adoption status is supposed to be shown in the info box. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:25, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Filmography
[edit]Can a filmography section be added on this article? --TribeHasSpoken (talk) 18:38, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- @TribeHasSpoken: I would certainly think so! So long as it is properly sourced (ideally like from the BFI or similar, not IMDB etc). Smirkybec (talk) 23:08, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- Understood. I will try and find a good source for his filmography. --TribeHasSpoken (talk) 07:32, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
