Discussion

[edit]

A quick Google search reveals that an etymology from Etruscan apru is also popular, and alluded to by some Roman poets; I'm adding that. Mustafaa 19:11, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Tragic Indeed

[edit]

Perhaps we should start referring to it as the ides of April. No, I am not trying to be humorous, I am in fact being serious. It's probably a long way off from being a colloquialism.

Non-Tragedies

[edit]

do we need to have pope john paul III's death as a tragedy? a lot of other popes died in april. but i dont think its a trajedy and I am removing it. Ols Dude - matt D

How is the birth of Christine DeWitt a tragedy? Who is this lady, anyway? I am removing the whole sentence. Later!!! 70.124.132.176 03:15, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed Pope John Paul II's death from list of tragedies along w/ Christine Dewitts birth. Neither constitute a tragedy. do not re-add them.--Matt D 21:40, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is the ending of the American civil war a tragedy? The death of Hitler? Can it be said the American revolution was a tragedy, or for the better of America? The air show crash and NASA deaths of just two people is also nothing compared to what happens every day in the world, and only seem to be listed because these things happened recently and people are fishing for something to post in the list. Overall, I'm most uncertain that April is special here, and that we could just as well make a section like "Tragic Month of X". Would that be a good idea to pursue? -- Northgrove 14:29, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Koninginnedag

[edit]

I added Koninginnedag at April 30, the national day of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.144.100.44 (talk) 12:20, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The words 'Calender' and 'and' have not been spaced apart. Someone please edit this as it's really annoying me.

An automated Wikipedia link suggester has some possible wiki link suggestions for the April article, and they have been placed on this page for your convenience.
Tip: Some people find it helpful if these suggestions are shown on this talk page, rather than on another page. To do this, just add {{User:LinkBot/suggestions/April}} to this page. — LinkBot 00:52, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Tragic month - can we lose this?

[edit]

The 'Tragic month of April' section is a bit peculiar - none of the other month articles has a similar section, and it feels a bit tabloid-y and unencyclopaedic. Consider: any tragic event has a 1/12 chance of happening in April. I'd like to merge the important events in it into a new 'Historical events' section. I'll leave it for a few days before I do, in case anyone has any other ideas. Squeezeweasel 18:02, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a couple of weeks since the comment above, and since nobody has objected, I've changed the section heading and removed the slightly weasel-y 'Tragedies', and have replaced with 'events'. Please add more cheerful April historical events if you find them! --Squeezeweaseltalk 20:38, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First democratic elections in South Africa hardly tragic - only if you're a rightwinger. The elections were universally praised for their lack of violence or bloodshed.

Now that you mention it, the whole section does seem a little forced, unless there's a classic definition of April as a tragic month. I'm going to get rid of the opening of Fenway Park in the middle of all of the death and bloodshed, because I think that was just some NYY fan dicking around. DirkLangeveld 13:08, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I say lose it. Like squeezeweasel said it's a one in twelve chance. Can anyone say definitivly that april has some sort of cosmic energy that causes it to be tragic? Of course not. So why should it be in an encyclopedia? At most we could mention that april has a reputation for tragedies but a section listing out the tragedies is a little much.--Matt D 13:36, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. There's nothing saying April is more tragic than other months, and personally I find the section itself a bit of a tragedy. People are now starting to post 2 man deaths like that on NASA although much worse things are going on every day in the world. It seems like such things are only tragedies because they happened to US readers and recently in memory. And also tell me how deaths of dictators and ending of wars are universal tragedies? ;-) -- Northgrove 14:31, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The section was renamed to simply "Tragic Month" and although it's better that way (it doesn't make it sound like April is special anymore), I still doubt we need this section here. Why only tragic events for example? Why not cheerful events? And why only for April? Also, the content is already covered by the individual date articles alone, such as April 1. Up until now, that is. -- Northgrove 09:22, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the section should be deleted and maybe replaced with a description, if absolutely necessary. There are just as many tragic events that happen in all of the other months of the year. Also, is "Argue about Gun Safety Week" an actual holiday or something placed there by a vandal?

Most of the listed weeks are US, ain't they ? Then tell it please. The oughta be a tag, a big one, telling "this is not the US Wikipedia." Feast of Dolls

[edit]

Moving this to Talk: "in Japan the feast of Dolls is celebrated in the same month."
Hinamatsuri says: "The Japanese Doll Festival (雛祭り Hina-matsuri?), or Girls' Day, is held on 3 March, the third day of the third month."

Eurocentricism

[edit]

The reference re. the Chinese to "their third month, which frequently corresponds to our April" is written from a Western rather than an international perspective. Should this not be modified? Shulgi (talk) 01:06, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Shulgi (talk) 01:10, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Eostre

[edit]

Bede equates Eostur-monath with Aprilis (April). Aprilis is dedicated to the goddess Venus and Eostur is dedicated to the goddess Eostre. Venus is the "dawn star"/"east star". If Eostre is equated with Venus then she also is the dawn star/east star and this could explain the source of her name. 24 April 2011 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.14.87.203 (talk) 14:35, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Typical April day in Minnesota" picture

[edit]

Does anyone think the picture should stay on the page? Its addition does not seem like a serious edit, and it was taken on March 1, 2007, so not even truly representing April. From what I have heard, I do not think that picture is typical for April. 99.107.199.30 (talk) 00:53, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Simplified introduction

[edit]

I wanted to leave a record of my reasons for changing the introduction to this article and those of other months. The start of the descriptions appeared to give undue weight to overly complicated statistics, such as 'It is the first of four months to have a length of 30 days, and the second of five months to have a length of less than 31 days.' These statistics were uncited. Albeit clearly correct, they appear to amount to 'original research' and their prominence appeared undue. Teacher1850 (talk) 04:45, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
