April Fools joke

While the BBC did perpetuate a hoax in 1965, the film technique had been established for some time. The 1959 film, Behind the Great Wall, used a process called Aroma-Rama to send scents through the air-conditioning system of a theatre. Smell-o-vision was created in 1960 by Mike Todd, Jr., son of Mike Todd. His 1960 film Scent of Mystery (1960) delivered scents to the audience throughout the film. Due to problems propagating scents in sync with the film and flushing the scents out between each showing, the process was never successfully implemented. But, that didn't stop American film director John Waters from releasing an enhanced "Odorama" version of his film, Polyester in 1982. In homage to Smell-o-vision, Waters included scratch-and-sniff cards that the audience used while watching the movie. [1][2][3][4]--Viriditas | Talk 09:24, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

BBC

The BBC did something with this somewhen during the nineties, possibly for Children in Need or Comic Relief. It was only a one off. You bought a card with a few smells on it; it was crap. You rubbed off a square on the card when told to during the TV programme, and if you put your nose right up to the card you could just about smell something ;)

FOX Broadcasting in the 90s

I feel like there was some sort of promotion for FOX TV maybe 10 or 12 years ago where they gave away smell-o-vision cards for use with a night of broadcasting of shows like Martin. Anyone remember this or has textual evidence of it happening? I think they gave the cards away at Pizza Hut or Taco Bell--Valley2city^₪‽ 07:25, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Smellitzer machine...

You know, there is actually another technology out there designed to do the same sort of thing as Smell-O-Vision, except it's not used in movies, it's used in rides and attractions at Disneyland, Disneyworld, and Epcot Center. I distinctly remember riding the Universe of Energy (I think that was the name) ride at Epcot, and when journeying through the section showing a physical recreation of a Dinosaur-era jungle, you could literally smell the rotting vegetation and stuff.

Another April Fools joke

Around about 1992 there was an April Fools joke distributed on Usenet News newsgroups. It was an peripheral device for a PC which emitted smells under control of the computer. I remember it because I had an interview for a job as a lecturer at a British Polytechnic where the Professor interviewing me wanted me to carry out research using the device. The idiot professor had been completely taken in by the joke. If somebody can find a reference then this April Fools joke could be usefully added to the article. Later. Google Groups appears to have dumped all posts from their archive earlier than 1998 or so. Bastards. Therefore, the chances of finding this article are slim. I seem to remember that as a special promotion, that the movie Rugrats Go Wild had a special scratch and sniff paper during the movie.
