The Lord of the Rings
[edit]Hi, I saw that you tagged The Lord of the Rings with the {{in-universe}} template. If you had tagged it because of the tense, you can also see that Me:S#Tenses also states that all-universe material must be in past tense, as it was decided by a consensus few years ago. —Mirlen 16:55, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Your view is perfectly valid. I was just addressing the issue because I thought it was due to the fact that the article was in past tense instead of present. (Many people tend to address the past/present issue frequently when it comes to Tolkien related articles.) Experienced I may be in terms of editing Wikipedia, but you're the college grad who probably knows more about writing than I do. Comaparing the back story and synopsis to the prose examples in WP:WAF, you are absolutely correct — it is still written in in-universe perspective. Since Tolkien's legedarium is so complex and lengthy, it'd be rather redundant to restate each sentence with the novel [insert verb], Tolkien [insert verb], the characters [insert verb] [insert second verb], etc. But I'm sure if it was possible for the editors to write OOU for the Wario article, then this form of writing would be perfectly possible in Tolkien related articles without being redundant.
- However, there is a significant reason why Tolkien related articles are in past tense (I know it seems irrelevant, but I promise it's perfectly relevant to the issue at hand). (I rewrote the reason for why we use past tense in Me:S because I felt the previous explanation I had written was insufficient and unclear.) And I'll quote from the Me:S because I'm too lazy to paraphrase it (and to be fair, I did write nearly all the information in Me:S, which probably needs to be fleshed out more in terms of writing and quality):
All articles that cover in-universe material must be in past tense, as decided as a consensus here. Though it states in the Guide to writing better articles that generally fictional articles should be written in present tense, Tolkien related articles are an exception, due to the fact that we are discussing more than just plots of novels, we are outlining the history of [what we now intepret as] a fictional world — the novels are written in past tense because they are memoirs meant to explain a mythical past of our Earth, much like the Greek Mythology. Also, take consideration into the fact that many of the information is taken not from the novels, but from informational texts (e.g. The History of Middle-earth).
- In short, Tolkien's legendarium and the Greek mythology serve the same purpose: they both offer a mythical history of our past in this world — hence the word, legendarium. The fact that Tolkien created a history for the languages he created (meaning, he made up languages such as Quenya before he wrote any of his novels) is a testament to that. So what I'm questioning is whether a total OOU-perspective is required because Tolkien's legendarium isn't merely based on a compilation of books. Certainly an OOU-perspective is needed to differeniate that Tolkien's legendarium are simply legends — fictional information about what we interpret as a fictional world — but I feel that when it comes to Tolkien's legendarium, an absolute OOU-perspective isn't necessary as much. But then again, this is coming from a Tolkien geek (I prefer the word scholar though :P), so I'm mostly biased about this. (Oh, and by the way, you aren't overly bold, so no worries about that! :)) —Mirlen 00:43, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- You have my full-hearted agreement that an even OOU-IU ratio is needed. What that ratio exactly is, is where we might disagree. I will go off to see the topic raised on the Standards page. :) —Mirlen 03:54, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Collaboration
[edit]Hi, just noticed your signup on the project page for Middle Earth and was wondering if you would like to team up on anything specific? I am a huge fan of things like grammar, tense, and punctuation and have been trying to clean it up as I went along. However, there are a hundred or so articles that could be expanded to fit the greater need of the project as a whole. The In-Universe pages especially. Leave me a message on my talk page if you are interested in working together and we will see what we can do. Thank you and welcome tot he project. - KaoBear(talk) 13:22, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Faramir is an excellent article to start on. I will poke about it this afternoon and make a change or two and then let you review it and so on. That way we both get the double coverage of review and self-edits and we will get it to FA status in no time. Seeing as I have about 50+ hours a week to edit, I will probably get to it a little more often than you will. Being a stay at home dad is fun for things like that. :) As for knowledge levels. Of Tolkien the works, I am about a 9.95 out of 10. Christopher is maybe a 5. Look for changes on Faramir in the near future and I am sure we will enjoy working together. - KaoBear(talk) 15:04, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Indeed, the Christopher knowledge is that low. Not for any particular reason either, just happens to be there. I assure you it grows veritably by the day at this point, and I am a real quick study so I am sure i will get it up there close to ten as time goes by. I don't know if you took a look, but I changed a few cursory things on Faramir before I had to go out for the afternoon. - 24.37.148.16 20:10, 17 September 2006 (UTC) - KaoBear(talk) 20:11, 17 September 2006 (UTC) - Sorry for the no sig line, i cleaned out my cookies and forgot to log back in.
- Well, now that I have made an ass out of myself with the Christopher Tolkien issue, we can continue. :) I will be working on Faramir heavily today to see if I can get a few of the thoughts on it a tad straighter and then I will let it go for you to review and give me some thoughts on and, when you ayhve time, to edit and let the process begin anew. - KaoBear(talk) 11:10, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well done my friend. It sounds nothing like an analysis of the story, but a detailed explanation of how the character is at forst developed by the mentioning of his name and later revealed to the reader and a deeper interation begins. I love the approach and will be working along the same tack as we continue the article. As for the pool, I hadn't even noticed the lack of a Gollum reference before, must have casually brushed over it. O course it should be added, it is a vital piece of the mindset of the ringbearer at a time of extreme crisis of conscience. - KaoBear(talk) 11:44, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
- Your resolve needs no help my firnd, you have a skill that is rarely seen in this place and I encourage you to use it for many years to come. I will not be able to write anything today (Wednesday), but tomorrow I plan on devoting a nice block of time to the young master Faramir and get him to a point where we can all stand back and be even prouder than we are now. - KaoBear(talk) 12:12, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- I have made a few changes and need to know if maybe I was a little too wordy in some areas, and not enough when I came to others. I have intentions of doing more today, I am simply attacking it section by section. As always, your comments are helpful and appreciated. - KaoBear(talk) 12:24, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I think that we have the information in there pretty solid. Youa re right, it is time to move on to the IU/OOU balance, which will need to be heavily modifed. I brought our actions to the attention of Mirlen, i thought he could give us a hand, maybe some advice or criticisms if we missed anything. I am hoping that when all is said and done, we can use Faramir as a reference to what a character article should look like. Keep up the good work as always. - KaoBear(talk) 15:37, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Faramir source
[edit]I just found a site while browsing that may have a great deal to offer on Faramir and his characteristics. It is research with strong Tolkien citations interlaced throughout. [www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/811692/posts here it is in full] if you wanted to take a peek at it when you had a few minutes. It is very intense, and, for fun there is a great deal of sarcasm in the author's tone. - KaoBear(talk) 16:57, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Touching Base
[edit]I appreciate the heads up, and trust me I understand. My youngest has been having some health problems as of late so I have been absent myself. We will get it done, fear not. :) - KaoBear(talk) 01:19, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

graphviz figure
[edit]Hi, Jordan Samuels. Thank you for contributing that nice diagram to the Graphvzi page.
I'm wondering if it would "look better" if t was flipped so California is on the left etc. I think this may be relatively easy (e.g. we may even have an explicit rotate, or just try different random initializations, or use the feature that says a certain edge is aligned to the X? axis well maybe that won't help.)
Glad you enjoy graphviz (I hope)

AfD nomination of Teddy bear effect
[edit]I have nominated Teddy bear effect, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Teddy bear effect. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. —Remember the dot (talk) 01:09, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
