- 1837 – Andover and Wilmington Railroad reorganizes and changes its name to Andover and Haverhill Railroad, reflecting plans to extend its line to Haverhill, Massachusetts.
- 1906 – The great 1906 San Francisco earthquake strikes, damaging the Southern Pacific Railroad's headquarters building and destroying the mansions of the now-deceased Big Four.
- 1934 – The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's Pioneer Zephyr is first christened as the Zephyr at Pennsylvania Railroad's Broad Street Station.
- 2004 – Connex (pictured) takes over the half of the Melbourne suburban rail network formerly operated by M>Train.
